Our Story

Rooted in Farming, Grown by Family

Lowe’s has always started with the farm.

Our family has been growing vegetables for six generations, and in 1958 David and Doreen Lowe began farming here in Byley on just 30 acres.

Today, the farm has grown to more than 500 acres and Lowe’s has become home to a farm shop, tearoom, butcher and a collection of independent local businesses. But behind everything you see today, we’re still a working family farm.

Where It All Began

Long before there was a Lowe’s Farm Shop, produce grown here was sold at local markets.

The family spent years at Middlewich and Crewe markets, building relationships with generations of customers and establishing something that remains important to us today; a direct connection between the people growing the food and the people taking it home.

While the markets continued, Doreen also began selling produce from a small outbuilding here on the farm in the 1960s. It was simple, but it marked the beginning of customers coming directly to Lowe’s to buy what we had grown.

From Farm to Farm Shop

In 2001, the first official Lowe’s Farm Shop opened.

What started as a practical place to sell our own produce gradually grew with our customers. The shop expanded, moved into its current home in 2011 and continued to develop into the place you see today.

More Than a Farm Shop

In more recent years, Lowe’s has grown in a slightly different way.

Ginger & Pickles joined us in 2020, followed by our resident butcher in 2021. During the Covid years, we also began creating space around the farm for other independent local businesses, something that has since become an important part of Lowe’s.

Today, people might come for their vegetables and stay for coffee, visit the butcher, browse the other businesses or simply see what’s new.

Still a Working Family Farm

Despite everything that’s changed, the most important part hasn’t.

Today, David and Doreen’s son Graham runs the farm alongside his wife Tracy, with their sons Tom and Sam also involved in the day-to-day running of the farm and farm shop.

The fields surrounding Lowe’s aren’t simply part of the view. We’re still growing, harvesting and working with the seasons, and much of our homegrown produce still makes the short journey from our fields into the farm shop.

Still Growing

Lowe’s will continue to change, just as it always has. But as we grow, we want to hold onto what made the place special in the first place: family, farming, fresh produce and supporting local.

And we look forward to welcoming familiar faces and new ones for many years to come.
